Protect Baltimore’s Working Families
and Small Businesses

Baltimore has significant problems with the rising cost of food, groceries and other everyday items. It’s a city facing increased homelessness, lack of affordable housing and increased crime – hurting local small businesses. But instead of focusing on these critical issues, there is discussion about another tax on beverages being considered that will cost working families more money at the grocery store and put small businesses in jeopardy if people shop outside of the city to save money. Baltimore’s local stores will likely lose business and possibly have to reduce employee hours, or even lay off employees, as a result.

The city should keep its focus on these issues, which are severely impacting the pocketbooks and well-being of Baltimoreans.

Too often, some politicians raise taxes in Baltimore and promise to spend the revenue to solve a problem – only to use it to fill a budget gap or fund something else. There is no guarantee that the money collected by this measure will be spent to solve the real problems that Baltimore faces.

SAY NO TO A NEW BEVERAGE TAX

BALTIMORE CAN’T AFFORD A NEW TAX

Baltimore is dealing with significant problems with high costs, crime, homelessness and affordable housing. Why implement a new beverage tax that will hurt working families and small business when the city has more pressing problems?

This tax will disproportionately hurt marginalized communities, which will make economic inequities in Baltimore even worse. Supporters say the tax revenue can pay for badly needed health programs, but why tax lower-income families to fund those programs?
